Worldwide we are facing unprecedented circumstances due to the coronavirus crisis. It’s a chaotic time where people are brimming with fear and anxiety. A number of our daily joys such as live sports, live music and quality time with friends, are unavailable in the current climate. We’ve had to adjust our hobbies to align with the stay-at-home order. Many have looked to music to provide solace. Levon Helm once said, “if you pour some music on whatever’s wrong, it’ll sure help out.”
“I’m in Love with My Life” by the indie-pop band Phases is the song we need right now. It glistens with California gloss like Fleetwood Mac’s “Hold Me” and produces a bass line almost as mesmerizing as Janice Johnsons’ on A Taste of Honey’s “Boogie Oogie Oogie.” The playful lyrics of the song are an extension of the lively instrumentation, “Come and lose yourself a little while, take a chance and let your body move, feeling good ain’t going out of style, alright, alright, I’m in love with my, I’m in love with my life.” The track will take you out of yourself and make you feel good, probably make you dance. You might even feel an enthusiastic sense of gratitude.
The single was released on May 12, 2015, as a track off Phases debut album For Life released by Warner Bros. Records. The band, based out of Los Angeles and formerly known as JJAMZ, reinvented themselves after James Valentine departed due to his commitments as the lead guitar player for Maroon 5. The new lineup consisted of Alexander Greenwald (lead singer of Phantom Planet), Jason Boesel (drummer for Rilo Kiley), Z Berg (frontwoman of the Like) and Michael Runion.
The song has sustained popularity in part because of its trendy synch uses. It’s been featured in TV shows, films and advertisements, including Faking It, Orange is the New Black, Telenovela, iZombie, Midnight Sun and an ad for The Honest Company. The band released an EP in 2016, but they haven’t put out any new music together since. We hope Phases reemerges to soundtrack the rest of the pandemic because we could all use some more lighthearted, groovy fun.
